Chapter Nineteen

Anders and I acted as if nothing had happened between us. We’d decided to wait until after the Blood Moon Ball to make our feelings public. He believed rule-following Eldon would disapprove, and neither of us wanted anything to compromise our mission.

My heart must not have gotten the memo though, because every time Anders glanced my way it threatened to jump out of my chest. It happened so many times, I was thankful when Eldon sent Anders to scout the site of the ball. One distraction down.

Today was my last full day of training. According to Elizabeth, the ball was touted to be beyond spectacular. It was an event where everyone in attendance went all out to impress each other, and we should strive to do so too.

We took her advice to heart. The most thorough glamours Anders could create would be used to hide his and Eldon’s fae essence from the heightened senses of vampires. Anders insisted that glamours of this caliber would take a significant amount of time. Basically, we’d need hours beforehand to prepare—else we’d stand out too much. And standing out was exactly what we didn’t want.

I was planning on using the time when everyone else was getting ready to visualize what I wanted to happen. It was a technique I’d used in sports as a teenager, always to great effect.

“Do what makes you feel most in control. You’ll need every advantage you can get,” Elizabeth said when she arrived that day, and I told her of the visualization technique.

Tossing herself on the couch, she settled in to watch my elemental practice. “Loads of us want to kill our sire and strike out on our own, but to actually do so is exceedingly difficult. Especially if you have a cunning maker who forbids you to take any actions that may precede murder. Those who try it are usually over-confident—just out of newblood status. In other words, they’re babies without a chance.”

“What about you?” I asked, not bothering to stop practicing magic as I listened.

“Well, of course, there are exceptions. I served my sire for over a century before I killed him, but my case was . . . unusual.” Her lips pursed and annoyance flitter across her face. Then she shook her head as if waking from a memory.

“I had help killing my sire. I only know about a couple dozen rogues who offed their maker on their own.”

I stopped practicing, Elizabeth’s words sinking in. “Did you know about this?” I hissed at Eldon.

He looked thunderstruck. “Absolutely not! I knew it would be difficult. It’s why we’ve allowed you only a little rest. That the odds were so dire—I never could have imagined. But what other option do you have?”

None. I had none.

I sunk into the couch next to Elizabeth and flung my head into my hands. Tears pricked in my eyes, and when I spoke next my voice wobbled.
